background

Upon qualification in 1989 Jonathan worked for the progressive JT Design Build in Bristol, the county’s first D&B contractor, before working for the regional office of a London based commercial architectural practice. He joined the staff at gcp Chartered Architects in 1995 and became a director in 1997.

Jonathan has developed the practice expertise in both inner city and rural regeneration projects through his understanding of the funding environment and by tailoring gcp’s services to support clients accordingly. This work has included community consultations and engagement, site identification, planning analysis, partner brokerage and capital funding appraisals. Clients have included development trusts, local authorities, charities and community groups as well as umbrella organisations such as The Development Trusts Association, DTA, and Action with Communities in Rural England, ACRE.

experience

Alongside this, Jonathan pursued his interest in sport, combining inner city regeneration with the development of new sports facilities. This included England’s first BREEAM ‘Excellent’ sports centre in central Bristol, as well as the Urban Cricket Concept for the England & Wales Cricket Board, designed to unite communities through sport. Jonathan’s involvement in the sector is driven by his own love of playing sport and seeing others benefit from participation.

Jonathan has worked on many projects providing advice around asset transfer from public bodies to community / voluntary sector organisations. Jonathan has supported both the Ethical Property Foundation and Locality on CAT projects with supported learning around the subject via events and webinars.

Parallel to his speciality in community-driven work, Jonathan has guided the development of gcp Consulting, an environmental assessment and design service that supports both internal and external projects. Jonathan consequently has a wealth of experience regarding successful sustainable development, from both a social and a political perspective.

Jonathan has worked as an expert assessor for Innovate UK (including Retrofit for the Future and Information & Computer Technology competitions), and has been part of the judging panel reviewing funding applications with ACRE.
